VFP at Air Base Buchel (Germany) in July and August. This summer, there were another 20 weeks of direct action at NATO’s Joint Air Base Buchel, by various groups, to demand removal of US Cold War era nuclear weapons from Germany (20 B61 strategic nuclear bombs). Each B61 can produce a 340 KT explosion. (For comparison, a 15 KT US bomb killed approximately 146,000 at Hiroshima.) And, the US is in the process of upgrading B61s to guided bombs that can be used tactically, a change that increases risk of use. This year's 20 weeks of “Buchel is Everywhere” activity included a delegation of 8 Americans that participated in a variety of nonviolent actions, including: barricading a primary entrance; vigil protest; and, unauthorized entry into the base at six different places, two different days, that demonstrated the vulnerability of the 20 bombs. The US delegation included a Chapter 91 (San Diego Chapter) member, Vic White. He left behind, in the “Peace Meadow” associated with this milti-year effort, a VFP flag and a banner celebrating the important work of the Golden Rule.
