“Spiritual Death” and Youth - VFP Chicago Chapter 26

January 15, 2016

In the 1960’s Dr. King walked through the cities and asked gangs to stop using violence.  In his April 4th 1967 speech “Beyond Vietnam” he expressed the result of his conversations.  He said, “They asked if our own nation wasn’t using massive doses of violence to solve its problems”.   Dr. King realized that youth are lead by example.  He said that,  “the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today—my own government” and “A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on the military than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.”

Dr. King realized that the military model is conflict resolution by violence and he would be appalled to learn that Chicago Public Schools is the most militarized school system in the world.  He would be appalled to learn that over 10,000 CPS students are enrolled in Cadet, Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, and dedicated military high schools – all operated by CPS at a cost of over $17M per year.

The Chicago Chapter of Veterans For Peace agrees with Dr. King that militarism is one of the three causes of the moral and financial poverty in the U.S.  We agree that leadership by example is the key ingredient in developing our youth.  Therefore we have undertaken an initiative to demilitarize CPS and to protect our youth from the culture of violence that is glorified in the military.  To learn more see www.NoMilitary.org  and our Facebook and Twitter – DeMilitarizeCPS.

Veterans For Peace was founded in 1985 and is an international 501(c)3 organization of military veterans and allies who are dedicated to the cause of world peace.  We are the only veterans organization in the world that is recognized by the United Nations.  “Peace at Home, Peace Abroad”
