VFP Rachel Corrie Chapter 109 Presents Teach-in on Vietnam War

October 19, 2015

When:  Wednesday, October 28 1-3pm

Where:   Evergreen State College
               2700 Evergreen Pkwy NW, Olympia, WA 98505

The Rachel Corrie Chapter 109 Veterans For Peace in Olympia will present a teach-in on the Vietnam War at The Evergreen State College October 28, 2015 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm

in room C-1107, Seminar 2 Building.  The teach-in, titled “No More Lies. Not then. Not Now.”, is part of the Vietnam Full Disclosure campaign sponsored by Veterans For Peace during the official commemoration of the 50thanniversary of the war in Vietnam

The official commemoration presents an incomplete history of America’s involvement in Vietnam.  Not included in the official commemoration are the errors of judgment and deceptions that led the US into the war, the vast destruction caused by military operations, or the growing anti-war movement among that forced an end to American escalation in Vietnam.

“No More Lies. Not then. Not Now.” will fill in these missing pieces with a particular emphasis on resistance to the war.  Speakers representing the anti-war movement—civilian and military—will discuss how resistance effectively capitalized on the growing discrepancy between official pronouncements of success and the reality reported by the media, returning veterans, and neutral observers to inform and organize Americans against the war.

The lessons of Vietnam are not simply history.  The same deceptions and errors of judgment continue to (mis)inform American foreign policy.  The teach-in will also address today’s anti-war resistance and offer ideas for challenging the assumption—the same now as it was 50 years ago—that military action is an effective means for achieving peace.

Speakers include:

  • Peter Bohmer, Member of the Faculty, The Evergreen State College, on the Anti-war movement in the US;
  • Anh-Tri Nguyen, Vietnamese Student in the US in the 1970s currently living in the US, on the impact of the US war on Vietnam and its people;
  • Graham Clumpner, Iraq Veterans Against the War, on contemporary anti-war G.I. resistance;
  • Glen Anderson, Fellowship of Reconciliation, on  continuing resistance to militarism and war;
  • Larry Kerschner, Veterans for Peace Chapter 109, Vietnam poetry; and
  • Mark Fleming, Veterans for Peace Chapter 109, on the history of American intervention in Vietnam.
