VFP Homeless Working Group Update

January 22, 2014

In June of this year VFP's Homeless Working Group will celebrate its 3rd year of operation. Our overall performance has been a bit like the weather--fair to midland with some turbulence. But I am happy to report that our group, right now, is strong and productive.

Last week we had our monthly telephone conference. Here are a few highlights from the meeting:

Five of our members will be attending the national convention in Asheville and will make a presentation on the "Best Practices" for the homeless.

John Milhous, who was homeless himself, is now a member of Veterans for Peace and also a new member of our working group. John shared with us some of his experiences while on the street and said that the VFP was a big help in getting him off the streets. John will be attending the national convention and will be presenting some of his artwork and poetry.

Maurice Martin talked about a wonderful program called "Dare to Care" in which VFP members make 300 to 400 sandwiches plus 100 hot meals each month and distribute them to the homeless.

John and Maurices' advice is of great value in our efforts to help the homeless throughout the US.

Jack Doxey,
Chair, Homeless Veterans Work Group.
