Legislative Action

VFP LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES

Based on our Mission Statement, Veterans For Peace has three main legislative priorities:

  • End current and prevent future wars
  • Reduce and redistribute military spending
  • Healing the wounds of war in U.S. veterans and overseas

WHY TAKE ACTION

It is often said that to achieve social change we need to Educate, Agitate and Legislate; that is, create an informed public that will act to demand a change in policy. VFP encourages our members to consider building an active relationship with their Senators and Representatives as one way to change policy. Whether we like it or not, they are the ones making decisions that affect issues we care about deeply. They are one of the most direct routes to change.

USE GOVTRACK.US TO TRACK LEGISLATION

GovTrack.us is actually much more than just a tool to track bills that are before Congress. GovTrack can send email updates when legislation is introduced on specific topics, when action is taken on a particular bill, when a given member of Congress introduces or co-sponsors a bill and on the activity of particular committee.

GovTrack.us is also a good research tool for voting and attendance records of members, comparing their performance with other members, and provides links to a map of their districts.

Take some time to explore this easy-to-use, versatile resource. You can even place a phone call to a member of Congress from the page for a particular bill!
