Major combat began in Afghanistan on October 7th, 2001. This year the war’s anniversary falls during a national debate over jobs, the economy, taxes, and the fate of vital services from Social Security and Medicare to schools and transportation.
There is a way to put this all together and bring it down to the local level: city council resolutions that say “reduce Pentagon spending and revive our communities.”
The New Priorities Network, Veterans for Peace, Code PINK, Minnesota Arms Spending Alternatives Project and others are supporting National Resolutions Week. During the first week in October “we the people” are calling on City Council members to weigh in on US military spending. We are asking them to pass resolutions on military spending and local needs, or forming groups to work on future resolutions, or going to city council meetings and making the connection between city budget cuts and runaway war spending. We are taking the saying “all politics is local” and putting it in practice.
