3) "Ready or not, here we go!"

Early yesterday morning , a MSNBC reporter called to ask about some of the differences and similarities between older activists and younger ones, as the "occupy" movement spreads. We talked for over a half hour. Below is what I sent her this morning after the synapses woke up.

hi sally,

it was a real treat talking with a reporter who wanted to learn about something and not just get a quick quote to finish a story. thank you for caring.

you said to let you know if i thought of anything else that needed to be said re: the relationship between old and new activists. here's something i think is very important that i didn't think of until after we talked.

one of the most important things older activists can do when they're working with young activists is...nothing. by that i mean we need to give the new leaders space. give them time. listen to them. don't be "looking over their shoulders" and suggesting what they're doing wrong. learn from them. they will make mistakes that we might have avoided. they will do many brilliant things we never thought of. but it's just like the parents who let their kids experiment and try things up to the point where they get hurt, compared to overprotective parents who don't let their kids experiment and learn. young people need the confidence it takes to lead this sorry race to something better. those of us in our late years have something to offer, but the future really does belong to the young. we've had our go. we've tried our mightiest. we won't quit till they shovel us under, but we are exiting the stage. we need to do it gracefully for our own sakes and for the sakes of those who might be able to save this planet.
