James B. Burkholder

October 22, 1918 - May 9, 2006

James B. Burkholder died May 9, 2006, after a brief illness, leaving Lucille, his beloved wife of 65 years. He is also survived by his five children, James Jr. (Genia) of Philadelphia, Carol (John) Waltman and Lise (Chico) Ramirez of Green Bay, Midge Adams (Tom Sinclair) and Mike Burkholder of Tucson. In addition he leaves nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.>
He was preceded in death by his son, Curtis and granddaughter Nicole.

Born October 22, 1918, Jim met Lucille at the University of PA and they were engaged within two weeks. After their graduations they married on July 5, 1941. Theirs was a life-long, devoted love. They raised six children and helped raise two grandchildren, Kathleen Vickers and Matt Adams. Jim and Lucille moved to Tucson after retiring from the Army in 1973. They became active in progressive politics, supporting a wide variety of causes including: care for the homeless, refugee rights, healthcare for the underserved, the gay and lesbian movement, organic farming, and peace and social justice locally, nationally and abroad. Jim understood the horrors of war having served in the US Army as an officer from before WWII through the Vietnam War.
He proudly served as the Tucson chapter president and then as the national president of Veterans For Peace, Inc. He supported the pursuit of peace until his death. The world has lost a good and caring man who worked tirelessly and gave generously, touching thousands of lives. His wife and family have lost much more. The family is truly grateful to Georgia Dunfee, the staff of Casa de la Luz Hospice and Father Ricardo Elford. Memorial service will be at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday 13 May at Southside Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Casa Maria, Primavera Foundation or Clinica Amistad. (Send donations for Clinica Amistad c/o Casa Maria 401 E 26th St Tucson, AZ 85713)
