Tributes - Jack Dempsey

John P. (Jack) Dempsey

Dear VFP,

It is with sadness that I tell you that member John P. (Jack) Dempsey, of Meridianville, Alabama, died last weekend. He was proud to be a member of the organization.

Jack was instrumental in starting the Art Department at the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 1965. He retired in 1990, and continued to teach through the Huntsville Art League. He led the Huntsville Literary Association's Poetry workshop, golfed every possible weekend, was active in
local politics, the ACLU and other groups that worked for the betterment of the human. He was especially proud of a trip he made with Witness several years ago.

He is survived by two daughters, Gabrielle (Peggy) Dempsey and Camille (Millie) Dempsey, both of Huntsville Alabama, and a son, David Dempsey, of San Francisco, CA.

Let me know if I can help gather info for you. His death has hit the community hard - the loss of such a peaceful man made harder by knowing he was shot in his home during a robbery.
