SECURITY WITHOUT EMPIRE: NATIONAL ORGANIZING CONFERENCE ON FOREIGN MILITARY BASES
February 27 - March 2, 2009
American University, Washington D.C.
Learn more here
VFP is a co-sponsor of the Security without Empire conference, to take place at American University Feb. 27-Mar. 1, 2009 The conference will begin with a protest at the Pentagon on Friday afternoon Feb. 27, and will formally open in American University's Ward Circle Building at 7 p.m. It will continue through Sunday March 1, with a Congressional lobbying day on March 2. See Agenda Here.
You'll note that VFP has a workshop space reserved for the afternoon of Sat. Feb. 28. The initial idea was to have VFP members gather for a discussion on how the No Bases campaign might be integrated into the general anti-militarism orientation of VFP. In other words, what suggestions we might develop for engaging chapters in these efforts. I have since reflected that it might be more valuable for VFP members at the conference to attend an alternative afternoon workshop, to maximize our opportunities for input and information around these issues, and to caucus together during lunch or other break periods to develop on going strategies for VFP and our members. I'm not sure how many members will be attending, but I would propose, however many it may be, that we can make this decision to use or not use our workshop space collectively at the conference itself.

UFPJ "YES WE CAN!" CAMPAIGN
UFPJ has launched the ‘Beyond War, A New Economy Is Possible: Yes We Can! campaign.
The campaign builds on UFPJ’s unceasing call to end the wars in Iraq
and Afghanistan by seeking to connect the issues of war and poverty,
the way that militarism abroad also impoverishes our communities at
home. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s ‘Beyond Vietnam’ speech at
Riverside Church in 1967 will guide the work of UFPJ during this
campaign, and we will lead our work up to a national mobilization on
April 4th on the anniversary of Dr. King’s speech.
Events are going to include:
March 19 - Local actions on and around the 6th commemoration of the war and occupation of Iraq.
March 31 - Possible day of local actions on Cesar Chavez's Birthday
April 4 - National March in NYC calling for a re-ordering of economic priorities
Aptil 6 - Delegation and press event in Washington D.C. to deliver signatures to Congress and White House
